I am not a telecom expert but a bit of a nerd/techie, and I will make this as short as I can.
I've had CL over 10 years and the speed I signed on with was 10 down and 1 up. This was adequate at the time and of course loads faster than dial up.
Fast forward to today, I call in and while I hear adverts for one gig internet, 10 down is the fastest I will ever get, as they told me my area is in permanent exhaust mode, they flat out told me it costs to much to serve my area. They pretty much told me we serve this area because no one else wants to.
I live too far away for cable, there is no fixed wireless here, not enough cell coverage for a hotspot, and satellite is way too expensive/ has caps/ bad lag.
Now for the problem, about 1.5 years ago they installed a node of some sort about .75 miles north of me. AFAIK, this node takes a fiber optic cable that carries phone and internet, and puts that on regular phone lines to houses in the area.
Ever since, my internet, which had literally never went out, started going out once a month, then once every 2 weeks, and lately it's been once every 3 days. I kept a journal of the outage with the date, time and even the weather.
I noticed the outage is almost for the same duration, between 11pm and 5am. No extreme weather had any effect, as it would not go out during the day during an ice storm, heavy rain, or a 40 degree temperature swing.
So I have called repair so many times it's not even funny. However since it always works during the day, they won't "repair anything that is not broken" and they are starting to think I'm crying wolf.
When the internet goes out, curiously enough, the connection monitor on my computer shows a tiny amount of data being sent and received, and I can still ping websites, but of course cannot do anything else.
This outage effects the small neighbor hood of mine, so I know it's not my equipment or lines.
Since this area is in what they call "permanent exhaust mode", they told me it costs them too much money to serve this area, despite being the only crappy option.
I really think that CL is doing this on purpose in order to get us to cancel as well as the neighborhood so they no longer need to provide.
This is supported by the fact the outage is almost the same duration every time.'
I would also like to point out every time it has gone out, I have DSL LINK to the DSLAM, and my phone never goes out with it, despite it being carried on the same fiber link.
