I've had CenturyLink's 1Gig fiber optic since July of 2015. I'm in Saint Paul. I was using my own Asus router for with Merlin's custom firmware. Ran rock solid this entire time. Always average around 900Mbps down and up.
Not so much anymore. When I notice things start slowing down, I'll run a speed test and it'll be degraded by a lot. I may break 100Mbps down and the lowest upload speed I've seen so far is 11Mbps!!!
Now it gets strange: Sometimes if I reboot my computer and run around speedtest it will resolve the issue. I can run another speedtest and it'll be blazing fast again. However, just give it a little time (sometimes just 30 minutes or so) and we're back to square one.
Other times the reboot doesn't matter. Like last night. I'd reboot the computer and I'd run speed tests on my Macbook Pro and my desktop computer (desktop is hard wired) and that wouldn't change a thing.
At first I thought it was my computer. So of course I ran scans for viruses, malware, uninstalled and re-installed NIC card driver, etc. Nothing. Didn't make a difference.
I installed the zyxel c1100z modem that CenturyLink sent me today. Same stuff happening. Speeds are fine at first, but after a bit... they will slow way down. So it's not just my Asus router with Merlin firmware installed.
I'm using the speedtest tool on CenturyLink's website along with SpeedTest.net. The Eau Claire, WI server always seems to be able to max out my connection in the past.
I'm kind of lost here. The only thing I can think of is CenturyLink is possibly throttling my speeds? I didn't think they did this with fiber optic... but who knows. I do download quite a bit.
