Tech Help on ULM and Structured Wire Cabinet

I am looking for information on how the universal line module(ULM) works for DSL service. In my basement all the phone lines are cat5e and have been what appears to be chained together just for phone service. On the ULM I see there are 2 orange tabs and 1 purple tab. Is it safe to assume the orange tabs refer to the phone lines in the house while the one purple tab runs to the actual DSL modem in my house? I am wanting to move things to a structured wired cabinet and wondering if I even need the ULM. I plan on keeping just one port connected for the DSL service while turning everything else into ethernet ports. If I move forward I this can I just run the outside phone line to the punch block and then the DSL modem line to the punch block and call it good bypassing the ULM altogether? Does the ULM do some line conditioning where it is actually needed? I hope the above makes sense if it doesn't I can draw out my thoughts as well. Thanks!
