For some time it seems like my connection at home has been getting worse and worse. While most noticeable on wireless, it's also been on the desktops to a degree.
I've done a bunch of things in the last week or so to try to figure it out because it'd gotten to the point where trying to use my phone/tablet was unbearable.
● I changed my wireless settings from n/g/b to g/b to g to n/g.
● I changed the encryption from wpa2/wpa to wpa2 only
● I tried a new DSL modem (NetGear)
● I use an ethernet over power adapter to get the desktops to the router/modem. I figured out that having another device plugged into the same outlet as the adapter caused problems.
Of the things I tried, I only saw any improvement with the desktops when I moved the other device out of the outlet that had the ethernet adapter in it. And that was a big improvement in terms of speed, but I was still getting drops.
Last night, as a last ditch effort, I decided to reset my DSL modem to factory defaults. This means that it went from being in bridged mode back to being a router.
After that, things seem to be working much better! I don't get time outs on YouTube anymore, Reader loads quickly, messages sent through G+ Messenger on my phone/tablet actually get through ! It's amazing. I spent a good part of the night last night doing speed tests and trying different apps and so far it's working perfectly.
It bothers me, though, that it appears that having the modem in bridge mode was the problem. I like being able to connect to my home Linux box via IPv6, and without the wireless AP/router having a public address, I can't do that. And I don't know why there would be a substantial difference in the performance of the 2 modes.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there a reason it would be like this?
