I was browsing TP-Link's site today to check out one of their modems and noticed that they've got new ADSL and VDSL modems.
It's not uncommon to see third party ADSL modems with upgraded local area networking technologies, the Netgear D6200 has been on the market for well over a year, for example.
The TP-Link 9980 is interesting because it's got reasonably good dual band N600 wireless networking and also because it's got a VDSL2 modem built in.
There's also the "Archer D9" which has a top speed 802.11AC wireless access point and an ADSL2+ modem.
It would be really interesting to hear if anybody's using either of those devices, though the 9980 is obviously of more interest, because it would be neat to see whether any more/better third party options for VDSL2 are becoming available.
