I have signed up for Centurylink DSL service in Montana. I will be doing a self install. In preparation I am replacing my in-house lines with Cat 5e lines or possibly just connecting the supplied DSL modem-to-wall jack cable directly to the DEMARC connection (cutting off connector on 1 end and wiring to DEMARC). I will have no phone lines other than the DSL service line. I am trying to get the best signal possible. All old phone lines and connections will not even be connected.
On inspecting the DEMARC I find 1) no pole service drop lines are actually connected to it (obviously a problem) and 2) the one drop line hanging by it (years ago ripped out) is an 1950-60's era 2 wire copper-coated steel wire, heavy gauge. Centurylink tech guy says this is GREAT, the older the better! Sounds crazy to me.
Two questions: 1)Do I have a prayer of getting decent DSL service over this line (other forums say it's not feasible) and 2) Since I may need to reconnect the ancient drop line is there any difference between the two wires or can I just connect them on either nut stud.
Centurylink says hook it up and if doesn't work they'll send out a tech. I cannot believe with all the emphasis on decent wire (CAT 5E, CAT6 twisted pairs) with today's technology that a 60 year old steel wire is going to perform even marginally.
Sorry for the long winded speech and thanks in advance for your help.
